Explosions and heavy gunfire have been reported starting during the early evening hours in Maiduguri, Borno State, Feb. 23. Initial reports indicate the blasts and shooting first began near the Giwa military barracks at about 1745. Details of the situation remain unclear; however, preliminary information suggests that a group of unidentified insurgents have attempted to infiltrate the city. Security operations are ongoing in the affected areas; there have as yet been no official reports concerning any casualties.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident. However, Maiduguri has frequently been the site of militant activity in recent years with Boko Haram and Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) having committed armed raids and suicide bombings in the city.
