Informational

Event

Environmental activists in Windhoek, including members of the local chapter of Fridays For Future, plan to protest at the city's Zoo Park, off Independence Avenue, starting at 0800 Feb. 24. The purpose of the action is to oppose the Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 73 project, which is being developed in the Kavango Basin, in the nation's Okavango wilderness region. Organizers have urged that all persons planning to attend comply with COVID-19 restrictions. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw.

Security forces will likely deploy to the demonstration location as a precaution. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near the protest. Although organizers intend the event to be peaceful, low-level skirmishes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest location as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in the vicinity of Zoo Park as the demonstration is taking place Feb. 24.
