Iraq: Authorities impose 24-hour curfew in Dhi Qar Governorate from Feb. 22 /update 1

Iraqi authorities impose 24-hour curfew in Dhi Qar Governorate following clashes between protesters and security forces, Feb. 22.

Warning

Event

Iraqi authorities imposed an indefinite 24-hour curfew in Dhi Qar Governorate on Feb. 22 following the escalation of clashes between anti-government demonstrators and security forces in Nasiriyah and the surrounding areas. At least one protester died and 21 other people, including 12 members of the security forces, were injured during the violence. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the government, the release of detained protesters, and action against persons accused of killing demonstrators. The unrest reportedly occurred near the office of Governor Nazem Al-Waeli; protesters burned tires and blocked roads in the vicinity.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture across Dhi Qar Governorate and within Nasiriyah specifically until the situation stabilizes. Further clashes are possible. Ground travel and commercial operation disruptions are likely near protest areas.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for additional violence. Exercise caution near likely demonstration sites. Leave the area immediately and take refuge in a secure, non-governmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow police instructions.
