India: Transport association plans strike across Jammu and Kashmir from Feb. 24

Transporters to indefinitely strike in Jammu and Kashmir, India, from Feb. 24. Transport disruptions likely; protests possible.

Warning

Event

The All Jammu and Kashmir Transporters Welfare Committee, a group of several transport associations, plans to strike indefinitely across Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory from Feb. 24. Organizers are demanding several concessions from the Union Territory government, including increased passenger fares and reduced taxes. Thousands of drivers will likely participate in the labor action. While the strike will mostly affect public bus services; truck and autorickshaw driver participation in the strike cannot be ruled out. Public bus service disruptions will likely result in increased demand for alternative means of transport. Delivery and shipping disruptions are possible.

Participants may hold protests during the strike. Larger protests are likely in major cities such as Jammu and Srinagar. Demonstrators may erect roadblocks on highways, especially National Highway (NH) 44, causing transport disruptions. Police will probably deploy to monitor any large protests that may take place. Clashes could break out if officers attempt to disperse gatherings forcibly.

Advice

Monitor public transport schedules from Feb. 24. Confirm all ground transport reservations and deliveries. Seek alternative shipping routes for time-sensitive consignments if necessary. Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Leave the area if violence breaks out. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel near demonstrations. Do not attempt to cross any protester roadblocks; wait for police to clear the road before proceeding.
