India: Private school associations plan march in central Bengaluru, Karnataka State, Feb. 23

Education associations plan march in central Bengaluru, India, Feb. 23. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several private school associations plan to hold a protest march between City Railway Station and Freedom Park in central Bengaluru Feb. 23. Participants intend to denounce a government order requiring that schools decrease tuition fees and are demanding that the order be withdrawn. Organizers have not announced a starting time for the march. Although media sources claim the procession will involve more than 20,000 people, participation in the march will likely range from hundreds to a few thousand people.

Security personnel will likely monitor the march and may try to break up the procession if it is especially disruptive. While clashes are unlikely, isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially on and near the march route, which will likely move along Sheshadri Road.

Advice

Avoid the procession due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
