India: Bharatiya Janata Party calls for shutdown strike across Alappuzha District, Kerala State, Feb. 25

Bharatiya Janata Party calls for shutdown strike across Alappuzha District, Kerala State, India, Feb. 25. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

The state opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a shutdown strike 0600-1800 Feb. 25 across the Alappuzha District of Kerala State. Organizers are denouncing the killing of a Hindu activist from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Cherthala the previous night during clashes with workers of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). Leaders have not announced any protests, but gatherings and street marches are likely outside party offices, government buildings, monuments, and public parks. High strike participation may cause localized disruptions, mainly in Cherthala; larger demonstrations will likely involve dozens to a few hundred people.

Security personnel will likely deploy to monitor any protests. Road and business closures are possible. Violent confrontations may occur if activists attempt to enforce strike participation or if SDPI supporters hold counterrallies. Clashes are also possible if security forces forcibly disperse gatherings. Authorities could impose a temporary shutdown of telecommunication services in the affected area to prevent or control violence.

Cherthala is approximately 29 km (18 miles) southwest of Kochi.

Context

Political violence is not uncommon in Kerala State, and typically peaks near election periods. Police often resort to force such as using batons, tear gas, and water cannons when clearing unruly mobs. Prolonged disruptions in urban areas remain unlikely.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Allow additional travel time near large gatherings. Confirm business appointments, transport reservations, and deliveries if operating in the area; do not navigate any roadblocks as a precaution. If violence breaks out nearby, vacate the area and take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions.
