Ethiopia: Militant attack on passenger bus near Adi Mesino, Tigray Region, leaves at least six people dead, 10 others injured Feb. 18

Event

Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a passenger bus in Adi Mesino, Tigray Region, Feb. 18, killing at least six students and wounding 10 others. Unconfirmed reports indicate that two government soldiers escorting the vehicle were also killed during the incident. The bus, with nearly 40 passengers on board, was en route from Mekelle to Addis Ababa at the time of the attack.

No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the assault.

Context

Long-simmering political tensions between the federal government of Ethiopia and the Tigray state ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), erupted into a military confrontation in early November 2020. Hundreds of civilians died in the conflict, while thousands sought refuge in Sudan. Although the government in Addis Ababa declared an end to hostilities after its forces took control of the Tigray state capital, Mekelle, in late November, sporadic clashes between federal troops and TPLF have continued.
