Bangladesh Nationalist Party to hold rally in Khulna, Bangladesh, 1200 Feb. 27; associated transport strike planned from 1800 Feb. 26.

Warning

Event

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plans to hold a rally at its party headquarters in Khulna 1200 Feb. 27. Organizers are holding the rally to demand free and fair elections and demand the government release former prime minister Khaleda Zia from incarceration. Several hundred to a few thousand people are likely to participate in the rally.

Ahead of the rally, public bus and minibus drivers affiliated with the Khulna District Bus, Minibus, Coach Owners’ Association plan to hold a 24-hour strike from 1800 Feb. 26. Organizers are holding the labor action to minimize the likelihood of violence during the Feb. 27 BNP rally; BNP supporters claim the transport workers support the rival Awami League party and are trying to disrupt the rally. Transport services on as many as 18 routes may be suspended during the strike. The strike may result in increased demand for alternative means of transport.

Security personnel will almost certainly monitor the rally and may try to break it up if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse activists. Supporters of rival political groups may hold counterrallies in the area; violence between BNP supporters and supporters of rival groups is possible. Protesters may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Confirm transport schedules through 1800 Feb. 27. Seek alternative means of transport if necessary. Avoid the rally and any counterrallies due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
