Officials in Iowa, US, ease certain COVID-related gathering restrictions Jan. 8; extend other restrictions through Feb. 6.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Iowa issued orders to ease certain gathering restrictions Jan. 8, while extending business restrictions through Feb. 6 as part of the state's efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The new directives lift specific limits on social gatherings, as well as the number of spectators at sporting and recreational events. Social gatherings of more than 10 people are now allowed, as long as social distancing measures are in place; spectators may attend sporting and recreational events provided they comply with social distancing guidelines and wear facemasks.

A number of previously imposed restrictions were also extended through Feb. 6. Restaurants, bars and similar establishments can operate without time limitations. However, they must continue requiring all customers to be seated; tables must be separated by at least 1.8 meters (six feet) with a limit of no more than eight people per table. Indoor entertainment businesses, such as bowling alleys, arcades, and indoor playgrounds, can operate without time limitations. They must enforce social distancing measures and ensure customers are wearing facemasks except when eating or drinking.

Gyms and fitness centers may remain open and must ensure social distancing during any group activity. At casinos and gaming facilities, facemasks are required except when customers are seated for eating or drinking. Customers and employees at personal care businesses must also wear facemasks. All employers are encouraged to allow employees to work from home as long as it is feasible for them to do so.

Through at least Feb. 6, all individuals aged two or older must wear facemasks whenever they are in public indoor spaces and unable to comply with social distancing standards.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.

Advice

Emphasize basic health precautions, especially frequent handwashing with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable. Practice good coughing/sneezing etiquette (i.e., covering coughs and sneezes with a disposable tissue, maintaining distance from others, and washing hands). There is no evidence that the influenza vaccine, antibiotics, or antiviral medications will prevent this disease, highlighting the importance of diligent basic health precautions.
