Pakistan: Power restored in most areas as of Jan. 10 following nationwide blackout /update 1

Power restored in most areas of Pakistan as of Jan. 10 following a nationwide blackout. Lingering disruptions are possible.

Warning

Event

Officials at the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) in Pakistan confirmed electricity has been restored to most of the country as of Jan. 10. Services were disrupted after an 18-hour nationwide blackout occurred on Jan. 9. NTDC officials confirmed a technical issue had prompted a blackout across Pakistan. The national blackout began as a series of voltage fluctuations before a complete power failure.

Residual commercial and communications disruptions are possible until technicians fully restore electrical service in areas that may still be experiencing power outages. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and petrol stations.

Advice

Exercise caution if driving in areas that may be affected due to possible nonfunctioning or malfunctioning traffic lights. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies in case of an extended power outage.
