Officials and utility providers working to restore power amid nationwide blackout in Pakistan early Jan. 10. Associated disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

A technical issue has prompted a blackout across Pakistan late Jan. 9. The national blackout began as a series of voltage fluctuations before a complete power failure. According to the country’s National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), the system has tripped, and it may take a while to restore power. Power failures have been reported in all major cities in Pakistan, including Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. The Islamabad Electric Supply Company is working to restore power to the capital city.

Commercial and transport disruptions are possible. Businesses without backup generators may have to suspend operations. Traffic lights may not function, resulting in traffic disruptions. The power outage may also prompt brief telecommunication disruptions.

Advice

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Ensure that generators are functional if operating in affected areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Follow all security personnel instructions.
