Hazara demonstrators called off their protests and sit-in in Quetta as of Jan. 10. The government agreed to the protesters' demands, including a commission to investigate the attack, punishment of militants involved in the attack, and compensation for the victims' families, among others. Additional protests are possible in the future if the government fails to abide by the commitments.
Context
Activists launched the action after an Islamic State attack killed 11 ethnic Hazara coal miners near Machh Jan. 3. The largest demonstrations occurred in Hazara Town, and protesters blocked a section of National Highway (NH) 65 during the days-long protests. Traders also launched a shutdown strike in the city Jan. 7.
