Bangladesh: BNP plans nationwide human chain protests Jan. 11 /update 1

Bangladesh Nationalist Party to hold protests across Bangladesh Jan. 11. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plans to hold nationwide human chain protests Jan. 11. The demonstrations were originally scheduled to be held Jan. 10, but BNP leaders postponed the actions. The purpose of the gatherings is to demand the resignation of the Bangladesh Election Commission due to its alleged failure to prevent voting irregularities.

The protest in Dhaka will take place at the National Press Club from 1100. Organizers have not announced the specific locations or start times for demonstrations slated to occur elsewhere across the country. Nevertheless, likely protest venues include press clubs, public squares, and government buildings, especially Bangladesh Election Commission facilities. It remains unclear how many participants the actions may draw; however, attendance will probably vary by location. The size of the rallies will also likely be affected by restrictions on the size of public gatherings imposed in response to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Security personnel will likely monitor gatherings and could enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between police and demonstrators are possible, especially if security forces attempt to disperse protesters forcibly. Protesters could block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to the potential for clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near gatherings.
