Israeli security forces shoot Palestinian at Qalandiya checkpoint in the West Bank, Dec. 7, following clashes at the Qalandiya refugee camp.

Informational

Event

Israeli security forces shot and injured a Palestinian man at the Qalandiya checkpoint, located between Jerusalem and Ramallah, Dec. 7. The suspect, who was reportedly walking in a section of the checkpoint reserved for vehicles, was shot after he refused to heed the calls of security guards to halt. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The checkpoint was closed to traffic in both directions following the incident.

The incident follows clashes between Palestinian residents and Israeli soldiers in the Qalandiya refugee camp during the morning of Dec. 7. Israeli soldiers reportedly entered the camp to carry out an arrest warrant. The clashes resulted in at least six Israeli and four Palestinian injuries. A connection between the two incidents is unclear but possible.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the area through Dec. 7 as authorities investigate the incident.

Advice

Heed the advice of authorities, including officers at security checkpoints. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem before traveling. Do not attempt to bypass a security checkpoint; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt Israeli security forces to respond aggressively.
