Violent protests have been reported at the Palais du Peuple (People's Palace) in central Kinshasa, Dec. 7. The incidents reportedly involve opposing political activists, including supporters of the ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party. Security forces have used teargas to disperse participants. Protests and clashes are linked to President Felix Tshisekedi’s withdrawal from the ruling coalition. Tshisekedi has stated he intends to form a new government.

An increased security presence is likely to remain in place through at least the evening hours of Dec. 7; additional violence is possible if protesters refuse to disperse. Transport disruptions are also likely in the vicinity of all large gatherings.
