Informational

Event

Unknown assailants, suspected to be separatist militants, killed a local councilor in Northwest region, Cameroon, on Dec. 6. The victim had reportedly just cast his vote during the country's regional elections. Militants in the restive Northwest and Southwest regions continue to oppose the vote. Elections results are expected Dec. 8.

Context

This was Cameroon’s first election to appoint regional councils. The federal government hopes the vote will help end a four-year long separatist insurgency and appease critics who accuse President Paul Biya of neglecting the country's 10 regions. Previously, separatist militants threatened to disrupt the vote and arrest anyone who took part in the process.

Advice

If operating in Cameroon, exercise increased personal vigilance around facilities associated with Sunday's elections. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution and the possibility of political violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe, non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local news sources for developments. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings.
