Thailand: Protests to be held nationwide October 9-14 /update 1

Pro-democracy groups plan protests in multiple locations between October 9-14; avoid protest sites as a precaution

Pro-democracy activists plan to stage a number of demonstrations across Thailand between Friday, October 9, and Wednesday, October 14. The gatherings are part of ongoing unrest demanding political reform and denouncing the alleged non-democratic policies of the government. Some activists have also called for reform to the powers of the monarchy. Counter-protests by supporters of the government and the monarchy are likely to occur as a response to the demonstrations.

Pro-democracy rallies have been organized on the following dates (all times local):

  • Friday, October 9: At the Thao Suranari Monument in Nakhon Ratchasima, from 17:00
  • Saturday, October 10: At the Central Festival Mall in Pattaya, from 15:00
  • Saturday, October 10: In the Saphan Hin area of Phuket, from 16:00
  • Saturday, October 10: At the Thao Suranari Monument in Nakhon Ratchasima, from 17:00
  • Wednesday, October 14: At the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, from 14:00

Wednesday's demonstration in Bangkok is expected to be particularly well attended and is due to coincide with the launch of a general strike. A heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are likely in the vicinity of all demonstrations. Further unscheduled protests, both against and in support of the regime, are possible across Thailand in the coming hours and days.

Context

Public opposition has grown against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's over government spending, the dissolution of an opposition party, and many other factors. Activists have also called for reforms to the powers of the monarchy. Protests on an increasing scale have been held in Bangkok and other locations across Thailand in recent weeks. Counter protests have also been held, particularly in support of the monarchy.
