Myanmar: Heavy rain causes flooding and landslides in northern Mandalay region September 15-17

Event

Heavy rain since Tuesday, September 15, amid the southwest monsoon season has led to flooding and landslides in northern Mandalay region. At least four people have died as the Yay Ni Creek overflowed in Mogok (Pyin Oo Lwin district), which triggered landslides on the surrounding hillsides. The landslides also damaged 24 houses and led authorities to evacuate 56 people in Mogok's religious hall.

Further adverse weather is forecast in the coming days, which could lead to further flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions to transport in northern Mandalay and neighbouring areas in Shan state.

Context

The monsoon season typically runs from April to October, during which heavy downpours frequently causes flooding in the divisions of Irrawaddy, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Yangon and the states of Kachin, Mon, and Rakhine. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding and landslides can be triggered in hilly or mountainous areas.
