Egypt: Heightened security presence in advance of expected September 20 protests

Security forces have been deployed in several Egyptian cities in advance of expected protests on Sunday, September 20. A large police presence has been reported in Cairo's Tahrir Square, as well as in Alexandria and Suez. Local media reports allege that checkpoints have been set up in Cairo, with police detaining and searching passersby at random for evidence of involvement in the possible protest activities. 

A heightened security presence is to be expected in Egypt's main cities over the coming days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out should protests go ahead. Associated disruption to transportation and business operations is likely.

Context

Sunday will mark a year since large-scale protests took place throughout Egypt, organized by exiled opposition figure Muhammed Ali. Smaller protests have taken place in recent weeks and months, amid rising discontent over corruption, living conditions, and police brutality.
