Two explosions in Jolo (Jolo Island; Sulu province) killed at least five people and injured 17 others on Monday afternoon, August 24. Initial reports indicate that the first explosion occurred at around 12:00 (local time), and the target of the explosion was a military vehicle parked in front of a commercial building near the Jolo town plaza. The blast killed at least five soldiers. The second blast occurred at around 13:00, although it remains unclear if any casualties were caused as a result of this explosion. It has been reported that Abu Sayyaf militants have claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming to have killed six military personnel.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.

Abu Sayyaf is an Islamic State-affiliated Jihadi militant group operating primarily in the southern Philippines. Its main areas of operation are the island provinces of Basilan and Sulu.
