China: Demonstrations held across Inner Mongolia autonomous region August 30

Event

Demonstrations were held across the Inner Mongolia autonomous region on Sunday, August 30, following a weekend of unrest against proposed plans to phase out Mongolian-language medium teaching in schools across the region. Unrest was reported in the cities of Hohhot, Tongliao, Ordos, and other major urban centers. Student protesters forced their way through police cordons which had been set up around schools and riot police were deployed to a school in Zaruud Banner. Police also allegedly beat protesters and carried out arrests in Horchin Left Rear Banner and Huree Banner.

Further unrest is possible in the near term. A heightened security presence, as well as associated disruptions to transportation, are to be expected around the demonstration sites.

Context

The Chinese government announced in August that Mongolian-language medium education would be ended. Three subjects: language and literature, politics, and history will be taught in Mandarin as of September. Those opposing the measure claim that the changes are an attempt to limit the use of Mongolian in the region.
