Algeria: Demonstrators gather in Algiers August 31

Demonstrators gather in Algiers on August 31 to demand release of imprisoned journalist; further demonstrations possible over the near term

Warning

Event

Demonstrators gathered to protest in front of the Press House in Algiers on Monday, August 31, to demand the release of imprisoned journalist Khaled Drareni. The rally seemingly remained peaceful and no clashes were reported.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of any protest site, along with disruptions to overland travel.

Context

Drareni was arrested on March 7 while covering protests in Algeria. He was later sentenced on August 10 to three years in prison for inciting unarmed assembly and undermining national unity. Monday's rally was the second rally in as many weeks denouncing his imprisonment.

Advice

Those in Algiers are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and avoid all protests or demonstrations as a precaution.
