Afghanistan: Airstrike kills Taliban militants in Faryab province August 30

Event

At least eleven militants were killed after an airstrike by Afghan National Army (ANA) forces struck a Taliban camp in Faryab province on Sunday, August 30. According to military sources, the airstrike was conducted in Qarma Qul district and reportedly destroyed the camp. The Taliban have not confirmed the incident.

Further clashes between militants and security forces are likely to occur in Faryab province and across Afghanistan over the near term.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.
