Suspected bandits kill at least 20 civilians in Faskari LGA (Katsina state) on June 9; similar attacks likely in the near term

Armed bandits attacked the Kadisau village in Faskari Local Government Area (LGA) (Katsina state) and killed at least 20 people on Tuesday, June 9. According to media sources, approximately 200 gunmen arrived on motorcycles on Tuesday evening with the intention to loot the village and steal foodstuffs and other items. Some villagers confronted the bandits, who then opened fire on them and killed at least 14 people. A further six people reportedly died at the hospital and at least 20 others were wounded. The gunmen fled before security personnel arrived.

A heightened security presence is expected in Faskari LGA in the coming days and further attacks are possible in Katsina state over the near term.

Context

Bandit attacks have become an increasing threat in northwest Nigeria in recent years amid rising communal tensions, with Katsina state having seen repeated outbreaks of such violence. High-profile security operations have previously had little success in reducing violence in the northwest.
