Nigeria: Militants raid villages in Borno State on June 20

Suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants reportedly raided the villages of Bunuri, Gubio, and Gaderi in Borno State on Saturday, June 20, killing at least six residents and stealing more than 3000 cattle. ISWAP has increased attacks on herding villages in recent days, sparking fears that the group may have changed tactics to target civilians instead of security forces. An ISWAP attack on a military base in Konduga also took place on June 20, with the assault being repulsed; there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Similar attacks and a heightened security presence are to be expected in Borno State in the near to medium-term.
