Hundreds protest in Kathmandu on June 9 against Nepalese government’s COVID-19 response; similar demonstrations possible in the near term

Hundreds of protesters participated in a demonstration in Kathmandu on Tuesday, June 9, to demand better testing and quarantine facilities to better combat the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Protesters reportedly marched through the streets chanting slogans when security forces deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd; ten protesters were arrested during the demonstration.

Further rallies and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the near term.
