Suspected Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) militants killed at least ten villagers in an overnight attack in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on Tuesday, June 9. The militiamen reportedly attacked Lenga village where they looted goods and burned down over 100 shelters housing internally displaced persons (IDPs). The attack continued until approximately 01:00 (local time) on Wednesday morning, June 10.

Similar militant attacks are possible in the region over the near term.

Context

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
