DRC: Militia attack kills FARDC personnel in Fizi (South Kivu) June 20

Event

At least two Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) soldiers were killed on Saturday, June 20, in a militia attack in the Fizi area of South Kivu province. The attack, near the village of Kamombo, reportedly involved fighters from several local Mai-Mai militia groups who targeted an FARDC outpost. FARDC forces are reported to have retreated from the area following the attack due to local hostility to their presence. However, a military spokesman called on the militias to join the peace process for the region or face a crackdown by security forces.

Further security operations are likely in the area in the medium term.

Context

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region. Whilst security forces and UN peacekeepers maintain a presence throughout much of the region, they have struggled to provide security for local communities.
