China: Tropical cyclone Nuri makes landfall near Yangjiang (Guangdong province) June 14 /update 1

Event

The China Meteorological Administration reported that tropical cyclone Nuri made landfall in the vicinity of Yangjiang (Guangdong province) at approximately 08:50 (local time) on Sunday, June 14. Nuri is currently sustaining winds of 46 kmh (29 mph) and is expected to weaken further as it moves inland in a northwesterly direction. Chinese authorities activated a level 4 emergency response (the lowest in a four-tier scale) to coordinate potential relief efforts. Authorities have warned that areas of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces may experience landslides and rivers may have higher water levels due to rainfall. Authorities had previously warned that heavy rains are also possible in parts of Hainan province. 

Flooding associated rainfall is possible over low-lying areas in the coming days. Associated disruption to transport operations and utility services are also possible during the passing of the storm system.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, plan alternate routes, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
