China: Flooding in central provinces kills at least nine June 9

On Tuesday, June 9, Chinese authorities reported that flooding in central provinces of the country has left at least nine people dead and forced more than 120,000 to evacuate their homes. The rain began the previous weekend in Hunan province and has since affected large areas of central and southern regions of the country, primarily near rapidly-swelling rivers and streams. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has stated that due to high soil saturation levels, many areas of the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Jiangxi are likely to experience flash flooding. The China Meteorological Administration forecasts that up to 25 cm (10 in) of additional rainfall is likely in areas in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and never drive or walk through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products and present residual health hazards.
