Authorities close central Brasilia streets as right-wing protesters gather on June 14; further protests anticipated

Warning

Event

On Sunday, June 14, the governor of the Federal District, where Brasilia is located, ordered that areas of the capital surrounding the Presidential Palace, ministries, Supreme Court, and Congress be closed off, in an attempt to stop right-wing protesters gathering in support of President Jair Bolsonaro. Car and pedestrian traffic was forbidden, with Bolsonaro's supporters instead meeting in other areas such as the Army quarter. The order was passed on Saturday night following the attempted storming of Congress by a small group of right-wing protesters.

Further demonstrations in support of Bolsonaro are likely in the near term.

Advice

Individuals in Brasilia are advised to monitor developments to the situation and avoid all protests as a precaution.
