Somali National Army troops kill at least seven Al-Shabaab militants in Hiran region on May 26; further attacks and counterattacks likely in the near term

Somali National Army (SNA) troops conducted operations in the Hiran region on Tuesday, May 26, killing at least seven Al-Shabaab militants. According to media sources, security forces targeted Al-Shabaab bases between Bulo Burde and Jalalaqsi. Weapons, ammunition, and vehicles were reportedly recovered from the bases attacked. The Al-Shabaab militant group is yet to comment on the operations.

Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia, and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
