Mali: Militants kidnap government official in Gourma-Rharous (Tombouctou region) May 2

Unidentified militants kidnapped the prefect of Gourma-Rharous (Tombouctou region) on Saturday, May 2, while he was driving back from Timbuktu. The kidnapping is reportedly linked to the results of the last legislative elections on Sunday, March 29. Negotiations with the armed group are reportedly underway to secure the release of the official.

Context

Several armed groups operate in certain areas of central Mali as well as in the northern region. Most groups are affiliated with Al-Qa'ida - under the Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) umbrella - or the Islamic State. Tensions are further exacerbated by strong underlying ethnic divides.
