India Meteorological Department issues red weather warning for predicted heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya states until May 28; follow authority directives

Warning

Event

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red weather warning for predicted heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya states until Thursday, May 28. Parts of Assam and neighboring Meghalaya have been receiving extremely heavy rains since Wednesday, May 20, after Cyclone Amphan weakened.

Storm-related flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions, as well as disruptions to power and communications services, are expected in Assam and Meghalaya states in the coming days. Heavy rain should also be anticipated elsewhere.

Advice

Individuals in Assam and Meghalaya states are advised to monitor local weather reports in the near term, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power and transportation disruptions, and avoid wading or driving through floodwater; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
