Myanmar: Armed group detains four police officers in Shan state Sep. 29

Representatives of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) announced on Tuesday, October 1, that four police officers detained in Shan state will be released “soon” after being detained for demanding “taxes” from travelers in the village of Mong Si. According to the TNLA, the plain-clothed officers were asking individuals for “taxes” at a bridge in Mong Si (near Kutkai township). Members of the TNLA then detained the officers on Saturday, September 29, for an investigation. Local officials are reportedly negotiating with the TNLA for the release of the officers. Additional security forces may be deployed to the region if negotiations break down. Associated clashes between TNLA fighters and security forces are possible.

Context

Multiple ethnic armed groups are active in Shan state. According to media reports, Kutkai township has experienced repeated fighting between militants and the military in recent months.
