Israel/Palestinian Terr.: Nationwide general strike planned October 3

The Higher Arab Monitoring Committee announced on Wednesday, October 2, that a nationwide general strike is due to take place on Thursday, October 3, to protest rising crime and murder rates in Arab society following the killing of two brothers in Majd Al-Krum. Participants plan to begin the work stoppage in the early morning hours (local time), including in the commercial, education, and public sectors. The Committee also called for nationwide protests; in Majd Al-Krum, individuals plan to gather at 16:30 although organizers did not specify a meeting location. Participants also said that they would boycott the opening session of the Knesset due to also take place on Thursday. Further demonstrations by youth organizations are reportedly being planned following afternoon prayers on Friday, October 4.

Protests in major urban areas, including Jerusalem, and in front of police stations are possible - particularly following Friday afternoon prayers. A heightened security presence is expected during the work stoppage, and clashes between participants and security forces cannot be ruled out. Transport and business disruptions are also expected.
