Nigeria: Militants attacks bases in Borno state June 1-2

Event

Islamic State West Africa province (ISWAP) fighters attacked multiple Nigerian military bases in Borno state on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2. Two assaults on Saturday targeted Nigerian forces at Marte and Kirenowa, northeast of Maiduguri. The soldiers retreated to Dikwa, which was later attacked on Sunday at 04:00 (local time), though ISWAP forces were repelled. A fourth base was assaulted near Dalwa, where fighting lasted for over six hours before soldiers retreated.

Later on Monday, June 3, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) launched an offensive into the Lake Chad region targeting ISWAP positions. According to a MNJTF spokesman, over 20 militants were killed and a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) was destroyed in the operation. At least four soldiers were also wounded in the fighting. Further militant attacks and security operations are expected in Borno state in the near term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
