India: Heat wave forecast to persist through June 8

Heat wave and severe heat wave conditions forecast for large parts of India through June 8; take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses

India Meteorological Department warned of heat wave and severe heat wave conditions for large portions of India from Tuesday, June 4, though at least Saturday, June 8. Temperatures as high as 50.6°C (123°F) were recorded on Sunday, June 2, just shy of the national historic record. Authorities have issued heat warnings for New Delhi and other areas and advised residents to not go outside during the hottest hours of the day. The heat wave has also resulted in disruptions to water supplies in rural areas. Similar disruptions may persist through at least Saturday.

Individuals in India are advised to monitor local weather reports, ensure adequate supplies of water, take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses (e.g. stay indoors or in shaded areas during the day, stay hydrated, wear loose and lightweight clothing), and seek medical attention if exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke (e.g. nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, dry skin, shortness of breath).
