Protests in Durban and Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal province) May 15, blocking major roads; avoid all gatherings

Protests have erupted in several areas of the KwaZulu-Natal province as of the morning (local time) of Wednesday, May 15.

Truck drivers in Durban have reportedly blocked major roads in the city to protest for better working conditions, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the area. Meanwhile, protesters in Pietermaritzburg have blocked the Central Business District to denounce a lack of provision of basic services in the Msunduzi municipality. Protesters have reportedly used burning tyres to block key roads into the city.

Traffic disruptions can be expected to persist in both cities over the coming hours amid heightened presence of security personnel. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible in Durban and Pietermaritzburg over the near term.
