Lebanon: Nationwide general strike planned May 2-4

Labor unions call for nationwide general strike May 2-4; widespread disruptions to business and administrative services possible

Warning

Event

Labor unions, including the General Confederation of Labor of Lebanon (CGTL), have called for a general strike from Thursday, May 2, through Saturday, May 4, to denounce the 2019 state budget draft. Union leaders contend the austerity measures included in the draft budget would result in salary cuts and alter current pension agreements, among other issues.

Associated demonstrations, as well as disruptions to business and administrative services, are possible nationwide during the strike period. A heightened security presence and localized demonstrations are to be expected near any demonstrations.

Advice

Individuals in Lebanon are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate disruptions to administrative services, transportation, and business during the strike, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
