Croatia: Heavy rain and flooding reported in southern counties May 14

Heavy rain and flooding reported in southern counties as of May 14; officials declare emergency in portions of Sisačko-Moslavačka county

Warning

Event

A recent bout of heavy rain and subsequent flooding as of Tuesday, May 14, has prompted officials to declare an emergency in Hrvatska Kostajnica (Sisačko-Moslavačka county). Minister of Environment and Energy Tomislav Ćorić traveled to Hrvatska Kostajnica on Tuesday, where water levels in the Una River are expected to reach 500 cm (16 ft). Authorities will deploy additional resources along the Una River over the coming days. Meanwhile, flooding along local waterways in Karlovac county has subsided in recent days, according to disaster management officials.

Lingering transportation disruptions are possible in affected areas over the near term.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas of Croatia are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering flooding and transportation disruptions, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
