Nigeria: FAAN threatens to shut down airports beginning May 1 due to debt

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) threatens to shut down airports due to excess debt beginning May 1; travel disruptions possible

Warning

Event

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a notice to private and state-owned airports throughout the country to settle their debts or be shut down, beginning Wednesday, May 1. FAAN said that affected airports had until Tuesday, April 30, to repay their debts or the agency would withdraw both aviation security and firefighting personnel, effectively shutting down airport operations. Indebted airports include Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (LOS), Gombe (GMO), Kebbi (DNBK), and Bebi (DNBB) airports.

Delays and disruptions to travel are possible during the month of May should airports be shut down.

Context

FAAN previously issued a similar warning in December 2018 but withdrew the plan after public criticism.

Advice

Individuals in or planning travel to Nigeria are advised to monitor developments to the situation and anticipate possible flight disruptions.
