Guinea: Nationwide indefinite teachers' strike to begin April 19

Higher education teachers call for indefinite nationwide strike starting April 19; associated demonstrations possible over the coming days and weeks

Warning

Event

The National Autonomous Union of Higher Education and Scientific Research (SNAESURS) is calling for an indefinite nationwide strike in all higher education institutions starting from Friday, April 19, to demand better working conditions and increased bonus payments. Members of the SNAESURS announced the strike would continue until their demands are met.

Associated protests are possible in the coming days and weeks. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around any related demonstrations.

Context

Numerous teachers' strikes and related violent student protests have been staged since teachers launched a strike on October 3, 2018. The Free Trade Union of Teachers and Researchers of Guinea (SELCG) - the main teacher union in Guinea - has staged several strikes in recent months and has expressed its disagreement with the Autonomous Union strike declaration, which may result in counterprotests.

Advice

Individuals in Guinea are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
