Intercommunal clashes between members of the Gumuz and Amhara communities left at least 17 people dead in Benishangul-Gumuz region on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll could rise, and that army and police units have deployed to the area to curb further violence.

Despite the deployment of security forces to the area, similar clashes are possible in Benishangul-Gumuz region over the near term.
