International Women’s Day events to be held nationwide March 8; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected near the demonstration sites

Numerous International Women's Day events will be held throughout Turkey on Friday, March 8. One of the main events, the 17th Feminist Night March, will start at 19:30 (local time) in Istanbul, outside the French Cultural Center in Taksim. Participants will then march along the Istiklal Avenue in the Beyoğlu district.

Additional events are expected in various cities across Turkey on Friday, including in Ankara at Sakarya Square at 20:00, in Adana at Kültür Sokak at 19:00, in Antalya at the Hadrianus Gate at 19:00, in Bodrum at the Tepecik Mosque Square at 19:00; in Izmir at the Centre for Measurement, Selection and Placement (ÖSYM) at 19:00; in Mersin at Pozcu Kushmiato Street at 19:00; in Eskişehir at the Espark Shopping Mall at 18:30; in Kocaeli at the Townhall building at 18:30; in Samsun at the teacher's house at 6:30; in Fethiye at Beşkaza square at 20:00, and in Çanakkale at the Golf Tea Garden at 20:00.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions including road closures are expected near the demonstration sites.

Context

Interntional Women's Day is celebrated each year in numerous countries on March 8 to push forward women's right and shed the light on inequalities in between men and women. Feminist Night marches are organized in Istanbul since 2003 to celebrate this event.
