Chad: Authorities close border with Libya March 3
Chadian authorities close border with Libya until further notice on March 3 due to security threats

On Sunday, March 3, Chadian authorities closed land borders with Libya. According to local sources, the border was closed due to a deterioration in the security situation in the area. The move came following clashes between security forces and Union des Forces de la Résistance (UFR) rebel forces and amid recent intercommunal tensions in the area between farmers and herdsmen. A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the near term in Tibetsi, Borkou, and Ennedi-Ouest regions. Further clashes between security forces and rebel groups cannot be ruled out.
Context
Union des Forces de la Résistance (UFR) rebels entered Chad from neighboring Libya, prompting the French Air Force to conduct airstrikes between February 3- 6, following a request from President Déby. An increased Chadian security presence has also been deployed in the area. According to Chadian security sources, at least 250 rebels were arrested and more than 40 vehicles were destroyed.
