Demonstrations to denounce President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's candidacy in the April 18 presidential elections are expected to be held in cities throughout Algeria on Friday, February 22, and Sunday, February 24. Similar demonstrations were held in urban centers throughout the country over the weekend of February 16-17. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected near any demonstration site.

Context

Civil unrest may continue to mount in advance of the planned April 18 presidential election. In early February, the National Liberation Front (FLN) party officially presented President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's - in power since 1999 - candidacy in the elections.
