US: Storm to bring heavy rain, flooding to Southeast Jan. 2-4 /update 1

Event

A large storm system is moving across the southern US and prompting flood, flash flood, and winter weather advisories from Texas to Georgia from Wednesday, January 2, to Friday, January 4. Flooding and associated disruptions, including flight delays, road closures, and adverse driving conditions, are possible in the region. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in Texas on Wednesday before moving into the Mississippi River valley and southern Appalachians on Thursday, January 3, and into Friday. Up to 12.7 cm (5 in) of rain is expected in some locations. Currently saturated soil will exacerbate flooding conditions across the south. Affected cities and areas include Austin, Waco, Mississippi River valley, the Louisiana coast, and Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Flooding and associated transportation disruptions are possible. Flight delays cannot be ruled out.

Additionally, a winter storm in central Oklahoma and northern Texas is expected to bring freezing rain and 10-15 cm (4-6 in) of snow beginning Wednesday evening (local time) and extending through most of Thursday. Transportation disruptions are expected for the region, including in Oklahoma City and along I-44 and I-35.

Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult.
