Sweden: Weather warnings issued in northern counties January 11

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued a Level 2 weather warning (the second-highest level on a three-tier scale) in Norrbotten county and a Level 1 warning (the third-lowest level on a three-tier scale) in the counties of Västerbotten, Västernorrland, and Jämtland for Friday, January 11, due to high winds which may cause "considerable structural damage" and transportation disruptions. Officials in Stekenjokk (Västerbotten county) recorded winds of up to 176 km/h (109 mph) while over 1000 people in Norrbotten experienced temporary power outages. Authorities have also halted trains and commuter buses in northwestern Sweden on Friday and schools will remain closed until Monday, January 14. Further transportation and power disruptions are possible in the affected counties in the coming days.
