At least 15 people killed and 34 others injured in landslide in Abancay (Apurímac region) on January 27

Heavy rains caused a landslide in Abancay (Apurímac region) on the evening (local time) of Sunday, January 27. According to local sources, the landslide struck the Hotel Alhambra in Abancay, killing at least 15 people and injuring 34 others. Further landslides are possible in the area as rain is forecast through Monday, February 4.

Individuals in Abancay are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate flooding and associated transportation disruptions, including road closures, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of moving water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
